Alex Vaughan: “Skia (shadow) was for me a contemplation on the impossible position of the contemporary composer – always working in the shadow of music history, in the gaps between all genres; we are everything and yet nothing at all. Does one lean into
tradition? To what end? Yet to reject tradition, is simply to accept newer forms of contemporary traditions, tropes and trinkets equally well established. Skia splinters elements of baroque, jazz, brass band and 1960s cluster music. It exists in the chasm between genres, a shadow or everything and nothing at all. But perhaps all music as with any other good thing is in and of itself just a shadow of something even more wonderful, glorious and eternal yet to come anyway.”
